This site

The German
term kunstschmied combines art
(kunst) and smith (schmied) into
one word. In English when two
words are united to create a new,
more descriptive term, a hyphen
unites what was two words into
one. So it is with artist and
blacksmith, tied by a hyphen into
one concept; the
artist-blacksmith.
