Artist-Blacksmith is a term similar to kunstschmied (art smith) in German. It is true that education for artists is a never-ending journey. In support of that journey, this site provides free information about artistic blacksmithing; illustrated & explained.

Floral Lights of the Renaissance; c. 14th & 15th century (Part 1)

Gallery Main Page

The Renaissance (1300-1600) saw a burst of decorative embellishment on what would have been more utilitarian in the Middle Ages.

These images are of period, wall mounted candle fixtures. They share a floral theme.

Candles of this period were usually thick. They threw far less light than do candles today. The candle would be stuck onto the spike, without regard to seating it against the candle drip cup.

Have an interest in period ironwork? Want to know how it was...and still is, made? The Artist-Blacksmith Quarterly magazine shares that interest!

Blacksmithing is not defined by time period of decorative motif. Blacksmithing is defined by process alone.
