What is "Handcrafted and Handforged"?

The metalwork from the studio of George Dixon, Metalsmith is made by hand. Centuries old techniques are faithfully applied with traditional, often period tools. Iron, heated to 2000 degrees is forged with hammer and anvil. Bronze, worked both cold and hot is coaxed into distinct shapes and representations. Fine details are chiseled into the surface. Forged textures and effects give a unique feel and look to every component, to every piece. From elegant pierced decorative expressions in sheet iron to boldly forged statements of traditional motifs in solid stock, all work meets the highest standards of craftsmanship and design.

What is "Handfinished"?

Each forged piece is hand sanded to reveal the intricate textural effects that only come from the traditional fires of a smithy. Bronzes are brushed and hand rubbed to bring out a luster that mechanical means have never come close to. The finishes are traditional. The same finishes have been on art-metalwork since the turn of this century with no degradation in appearance. These are clear coats that allow the metal textures to be seen, I do not paint. I do not do exterior work. My work, when the hand finish process is complete will stand for decades with only periodic care, not unlike that which fine wood furniture requires .
